Social events

One of the main benefits of EMSOS meetings is the opportunity for people to mix with their friends and meet new acquaintances from all over Europe.

There will be plenty of space at the meeting venue for meeting others and exchanging ideas. To enhance the pleasure of your trip to Birmingham we have arranged the following events, all of which are included in the basic cost:

Welcome reception

1830-2000; Wednesday, 5^th May

Venue: Birmingham Sea Life Centre

The Birmingham Sea Life Centre is situated a short walk from the Conference Centre and main hotels. It is a tropical paradise in the heart of the buzzing city. It features a touch pool and a one million-litre ocean tunnel, where you'll encounter everything from starfish to seahorses, sharks and rays.  The largest residents are two enormous giant sea turtles - Molokai and Gulliver.

At the welcome reception you will have the opportunity to meet your friends in a convivial atmosphere at the start of the meeting. No formal dinner is arranged for this evening but we will make suggestions for some of the many excellent restaurants within walking distance. Birmingham is a multicultural city and its restaurants reflect this. If you have never had a balti then try one in Birmingham - the balti capital of the world!

 

Gala dinner

1930-2400; Thursday, 6th May

Venue: Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens opened in 1832, at a time when new plants were being discovered across the world. The botanical Gardens were founded to act as a home for the exotic and unusual plants that were being brought back from overseas. Today, the Botanical Gardens are a mixture of mature trees, shrubs and unusual plants with a tropical and subtropical house. In May the gardens will be in full glory.  It also caters for dinners and balls and we will be using one of the main rooms as the venue for our Gala dinner with entertainment and music well into the night. The venue is a brisk 20 minute walk from the city centre but transport will be available.
